The scheduled performance tonight (Saturday) of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre has had to be cancelled due to the severe weather conditions in the north of the country.

A near capacity audience were due to attend tonight’s concert to see the stars of the hit movie Brassed Off, and theatre staff are now contacting all those due to attend.

As many of the band’s members live high up in the hills around Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and with over a foot of snow falling in some places overnight, it has made it impossible for them to leave home.

A spokesman for The Marina confirmed that “all patrons will receive a full refund or have the opportunity to swap their tickets to another Marina event,” and management are hoping to re-schedule the performance. However the band’s busy schedule means that this may take some time to confirm.

Marina Theatre chief executive Martin Halliday said: “The band are so disappointed not to be able to make it to Lowestoft today. We fully understand the reasons behind this and are sure our audiences will do so too.”

❏ To arrange a refund or exchange, ticket holders are asked to return their tickets to the Marina box office in due course.

Elsewhere in Waveney, while some snow fell overnight in parts of Suffolk, the district has largely avoided snowfall.

Light sleety snow fell for a brief spell in Lowestoft for 15 minutes this morning, but according to the experts at Weatherquest there is the prospect of further snow to come across Suffolk.

Temperatures are likely to drop to a very unseasonal -3C overnight, turning any snowfall to ice and creating treacherous conditions on the roads. It will be mainly dry.
