Teenage speedway rider Darryl Ritchings is finally conscious after lying in a sedated state for almost two weeks following a horror crash.

Two initial attempts to awaken the 19-year-old failed but last night’s proved successful – much to the delight of his family and supporters of the dangerous two-wheel sport.

The King’s Lynn Young Stars rider, who was hurt competing for his hometown club Swindon Robins on Thursday April 3, is thought to be disorientated but can now embark on a long and slow road to recovery.

It is currently not known how long Mr Ritchings will remain in Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital for or what the long-lasting effects of his injuries will be.

The father-of-one was put to sleep by doctors to allow the swelling on his brain to go down following the accident in Wiltshire.
