A judge said it was “disgusting” that a woman, who was secretary of the Ormesby branch of the Royal British Legion stole £4391 from what he described as one of the country’s best loved charities.

Karen King, 50, stole £1289 raised from the Poppy appeal, and also took the rest of the cash, which was raised at fund-raising bingo events, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Chris Youell prosecuting, said when the thefts were discovered she admitted she was deeply in debt and said she had spent the cash on “rubbish”

The thefts took place between June 2012 and November 2012.

King of Ormesby Glebe, Hemsby, admitted the three theft charges and was given a 12 month jail sentence suspended for two years. She was also ordered to do 200 hours community work.

The court heard she had no assets at the moment to pay any of the cash back.

Michael Clare, for King, said “She let everyone down who trusted her. She knows her behaviour has been mean and might be seen as despicable by those who trusted her.”

However he said she had a young family and was a carer for her elderly parents so if she was sent into custody they would suffer.

Sentencing King, Judge Stephen Holt said the work of the RBL was very much one based on trust and said: “It is one of our best loved charities.

He said it raised cash for elderly soldiers as well as younger servicemen injured, while serving the country.

“What you did was quite disgusting. When people hear about your offending they will also be quite disgusted.”

He said it was a breach of trust.
