A second quiz night is to be held in the Norfolk village of Shouldham to help residents who bought their own community pub raise vital funds for their new venture.
The first quiz for the Save Our King’s Arms (SOKA) campaign was hosted in September as it was looking to raise £150,000 from members of the public to buy the historic venue overlooking the village green, which closed in 2012 and left a place which once boasted six pubs without a single watering hole to its name.
Since then, organisers have not only raised the money they needed by selling shares in the venue, but were also given a £189,000 government grant, enabling them to purchase the 17th-century venue from landlord Punch Taverns and have money available for refurbishments.
Yet, although they have raised the money they need for the actual purchase, money from the fund-raising quiz being held at St Martin at Shouldham Primary School at 7.30pm will help to pay for garden furniture and equipment for the children’s play area.
EDP editor Nigel Pickover, who will host the quiz, said: “I am delighted that I will be returning to Shouldham to help the villagers in their fantastic campaign.
“The SOKA campaign is an amazing success story of how a Norfolk village came together to save its last remaining pub and ensure it will be kept open for future generations.
“At a time when pubs are closing, their campaign is an inspiration and that is why I am proud the EDP is supporting their ongoing efforts.”
SOKA is currently in the process of appointing a manager for the pub and hopes to make an announcement in due course.
It is looking to reopen the venue some time during the spring and early summer, once refurbishments have been completed.
SOKA secretary Phil Harriss said: “Yes, we have bought the King’s Arms, but we still need to equip it to become a genuine community pub. Hence the return of quiz night.”
