An evening of music and stories with a nautical flavour will hit Lowestoft later this year.

Tickets for a night of sea shanties to accompany the story of Lowestoft’s Beach Village have sold out – and so an additional performance is to be staged.

The Beach Village show at the Seagull Theatre in Pakefield on Friday, April 13 has sold out, so the Rogues Shanty Chorus will also now perform on Sunday, April 15 at 2.30pm.

The popular shanty choir, which hails from Lowestoft, is run by the Voice cLoud – funded by People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthIntend through The Health Lottery.

The show will explore the intriguing history of Lowestoft’s beach village, situated to the extreme east of the town and home to a thriving fishing community.

The group will perform their inimitable mix of sea shanties, as sung by the town fishermen, accompanied by stories which will explore the lives of the residents of ‘The Beach’ as well as the social and historical importance of the village to the town.

Towards the end of the 18th Century, some basic houses were installed on the Denes area of Lowestoft.

These were the start of what became known as the Beach Village or, by the residents, a “town below the cliff”.

According to research, a guide book stated that by 1812: “The buildings had become so numerous that, had they been built more compactly, they would have been sufficient to form a small town themselves”.

By the end of the century, that is precisely what happened. The village existed until around the end of the Second World War when the floods of 1953 and incoming commerce making a base in the area, pushed the residents out.

The show starts at 2.30pm on Sunday, April 15. All seats are priced at £7 and they are available now from the Seagull Theatre box office on 01502 589726 or online at www.theseagull.co.uk
