The accolade is a Rotary International Award (named after the founder of the organisation) which is awarded to those Rotarians who in the opinion of colleagues have made an outstanding contribution to Rotary aims and objectives.

Mr Abbs received his prestigious award for his outstanding contributions to the work of the North Norfolk Young Carers unit within the Holt Youth Project.

He got involved in an attempt to find a mini-bus to pick up the children from all around North Norfolk to take to the centre in Holt.

This expanded to general fund raising, and for the last two years the club has held a charity ball to raise more money - including the £7,500 raised from the event last month.

Mr Abbs has been a key organiser as well as for charity golf days at Cromer Golf Club. A club spokesman said: “Like so many people who do this sort of thing he is very modest about it all, and so his Rotary Club decided to seek some recognition via the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.”
