For most 16-year-olds, the prospect of collecting their GCSE results is enough to prompt some serious nail-biting.

But for one talented racket sports player, anticipation is growing as he also prepares to represent his country on the world stage.

Ross Wilson, from Lowestoft, has been selected for Team GB's U16s first team as they jet off for the Racketlon World Championships to be held in Zurich from August 22 to 26.

Having first tried his hand at racket sports when he was six-years-old, Ross has progressed to become an accomplished competitor in tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis. His talents drew him to Racketlon, which sees the four sports played in sequence and the player with the most points wins.

As the tournament and results day loom large, Ross is readying himself for what is set to be a pivotal month.

'I'm not actually sure which I'm more nervous about,' said Ross. 'GCSEs are obviously a big part of my life so the results probably have the edge.

'As well as being nervous for the worlds I'm really excited. I represented GB for the first time last year and you really do get a thrill out of it, so it's great to be able to represent my country again.

'Ideally I'd like to win but it's going to be tough because there's some great opposition from around the world taking part.'

Despite the sport's low profile, Ross has been playing Racketlon for the last five years and has enjoyed success on the national and international stage.

In April he became British U16 champion and took the title in the men's B category - elevating him to 27th in the UK senior rankings.

Ross also came fourth in the same category at a pre-world championships warm-up event in Manchester, where there was ample evidence that the sport is flourishing.

'There were loads of new faces in Manchester and the sport definitely seems to be growing,' added father Andy Wilson, who will travel to Switzerland alongside Ross. 'A lot of youngsters are coming through and, as Racketlon is self-funded, UK Racketlon is pushing for increased recognition.

'It's a great achievement for Ross to be selected again for what is a really close-knit team.'

Ross and Mr Wilson would like to thank coaches Mark Websdale, Gareth Bowker and George Caplin for their continued support.
