When Ronnie Chandler set about performing some routine repair work on a house in 1954, little did he know he was about to meet his future wife of 60 years.

The owners of the Blundeston property had a daughter named June, and it wasn't long until the romance between the pair began to blossom.

They were together for six months before Mr Chandler was called away to Germany for two years' worth of National Service, a requirement of most healthy men at the time.

Once he returned and the couple were able to settle down, they married on March 1, 1958, at St Mary's Church in Blundeston.

Despite the lure of an exotic honeymoon, the new Mr and Mrs Chandler instead committed to buying a house of their own. In the ensuing years they had two daughters, Lyne and Karen, and they now have five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren - all of whom live locally and gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion last week.

Looking back on six decades of marriage, the Oulton Broad couple insist there are no elaborate secrets behind their love's longevity.

'We've always got along together and looked after each other,' said Mr Chandler. 'We certainly don't always agree on everything - perhaps even nine times out of 10 we don't - but we don't fight either.'

'We're very happy with everything we've done during our lives,' added Mrs Chandler.

Mr Chandler worked in the building trade for 50 years before assuming a role with Waveney District Council, while June worked in Gorleston at the Johnstone factory.

But if one thing has been constant throughout their lives - aside from their love - it is Mr and Mrs Chandler's desire to go on holiday as often as possible.

'No matter what, the holidays were always the thing we looked forward to,' said Mrs Chandler.

'We've been pretty much everywhere in the UK and, out of all the places we've visited, we love Eastbourne the most.'

Having received a card from the Queen to congratulate them on their 60 years, there was a nice full circle on the couple's anniversary when the country was hit by widespread snowfall.

'There was snow on the day we married and snow on the day of our 60th anniversary,' said Mr Chandler. 'They didn't close all the schools in those days, though!'
