Work to prepare access to Thetford’s new bus interchange will take place on Sunday.

The first phase will see St Nicholas Street and Minstergate close from London Road to the car park all day, and the same stretch will close from 6pm to 11pm from August 4 to 6.

Businesses and residents have been asked to make alternative parking and delivery arrangements while the £195,000 works take place.

During the second phase, London Road and Norwich Road from 7 Minstergate to 13 Norwich Road will see traffic control measures in place from 9am to 4.30pm from August 4 for up to three weeks.

This will include lane closures with Stop/Go boards being used.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council, who are responsible for the work, said: “Access to any properties within the limits of the works will be maintained from one end of the closure at any time, but it is inevitable that there will be some disruption.

“The County Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Kier Group are carrying out the work on behalf of the county council.

  • Agree with Stix Peters. The town centre during the rush hour is horrendous. I say close the centre to transport, and make it accessible only to push bikes and delivery trucks. All the locals simply head for the A11, and bypass the centre. Hell, judging by the sizes of some people in Thetford, getting on a bike will do 'em a world of good!

  • ..... based on our own experience, over the last two weeks, of roadworks initiated by Norfolk County Council ....... please double the expected time that the Works are planned to take place !!!

  • Surely this will cause less chaos?? People needing to get from one end of Thetford to the other can always take the mile and a bit and use the A11. No interference with the school run then. If you want to go into the town centre, you could always walk or park somewhere else, there's pleanty of car parks all within walking distance to the town, or even take a bus. Everyone has been quick to criticise this and try to stop Thetford moving into the 21st century. I for one am looking forward to having a new bus station. Can't possibly be more dangerous than the sorry excuse of a bus station we already have.

  • Obviously this work needs to be done but who on earth made the decision to wait until the school holidays to begin? Isn't everyone aware that its likely to be the busiest time. Chaos is sure to ensue!
