The grants, all made to Grade I, II or II* listed churches, have been awarded though the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Grants for Places of Worship (GPOW) programme.

Grants confirmed include:

All Saints’ Church, Cockthorpe, north Norfolk: £240,000.

St George, Colegate, Norwich: £85,900.

St Wendreda, March, Cambridgeshire: £36,900.

St James’ Church, Dunwich, Suffolk: £160,300.

All Saints’ Church, Ramsholt, Suffolk: £70,900.

St Margaret’s Church, Shottisham, Suffolk: £66,300.

St George, Great Bromley, Essex: £54,800.

Robyn Llewellyn, the lottery fund’s head of the east of England region, said: “Churches have been at the heart of our communities for hundreds of years.

“We are delighted that St Wendreda has been awarded a grant to address the urgent repairs needed to its structure.

“Not only are the wider Fens an area of focus for us, the church itself is a very important building, both architecturally and to its community, and epitomises the type of rural church deserving preservation and protection for future generations.”

  • Whilst it is lovely to hear that these churches have been awarded money for essential repairs. The people of Thetford have to watch as the once beautiful St Mary the Less continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate. It is a mystery to me that no money has been made available to make the necessary repairs.
