An intrepid mum is set to embark on the next stage of her 1,000-mile pilgrimage to raise crucial funds for the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).

Judith Tooth, 47, of Fen Street, Redgrave, has already raised approximately £4,000 for the charity since starting her expedition along the ancient pilgrim route to Santiago De Compostela, in Spain, two years ago.

The organisation works to alleviate poverty and suffering in developing countries.

She has been completing the route in stages and last year walked 100-miles from Arles to St Martin D’Orb in France, where she will be beginning her walk on June 28.

The money raised can be used to buy gifts such as chickens, a vegetable garden and a water supply to help a struggling community create a better future for themselves.

Ms Tooth, who is a home educator and freelance journalist, said: “I have raised a lot more than I expected so far, so now the challenge is to try and keep it going.”

She will be walking 15 miles a day for 10 days as part of the journey.

She will have a walking companion in Newmarket parish priest Simon Blakesley, who used to be priest at St Henry Morse.

Her training has involved walking the six-mile route to her parish church.

She has gradually been increasing the weight she carries in her backpack to make her walks more challenging.
