Happisburgh Lighthouse swings opens its doors for the summer this weekend.

The local landmark - the oldest working lighthouse on the Norfolk coast and the only independently operated lighthouse in the country - will be open every Sunday from July 23 to September 3, as well as Bank Holiday Monday, August 28, from 10.30am to 4pm.

The outside of the lighthouse, which relies on donations from the public, is due to be repainted in 2018 and a major fundraising event is being planned before then.

Denise Burke, lighthouse souvenir coordinator, said: “We are expecting record crowds to visit Happisburgh lighthouse this summer. It’s a unique visitor experience with wonderful views of our coast today and a fascinating history guiding the mariner since 1791.

“We hope that visitors will take great memories home with them and buy some of our new souvenirs. The new aprons and tea towels in particular would make ideal gifts. We also have many more souvenirs suitable for younger visitors.”

Entry is priced £3 for adults and £1 for children (16 and under). Children under one metre in height are not allowed to climb the 112 steps to the lantern. Postcode for SatNav: NR12 0PY
