A new Stalham resident has made a plea for something to be done about rubbish in the town.

Sue Willis complained about the state of Stalham at this month's meeting of Stalham Town Council.

Mrs Willis, a former chairman of North Norfolk District Council, has lived with her husband John in Chapel Field Road for a year.

'I would be sorely embarrassed to have visitors and walk them through the High Street on occasions,' she said.

They had already had to ask the district council to remove eight tyres and two bedsteads from a ditch near their home.

'We are sick to death of seeing a disgraceful amount of rubbish dropped everywhere in Stalham, particularly in the passage between Tesco and The Swan. My husband walks our dog there, picking up plastic bags as he goes along.

'The general amount of detritus left in ditches is appalling. Further along from us there are three or four televisions which have obviously been there for years.

'It's not right. It's people who have not got much of a conscience and don't take things to the tip. ' Mrs Willis added.

Stalham town councillor Ivan Kidd disputed Mrs Willis' claim that the High Street was rubbish-strewn. He said it was litter-picked by the district council's contractors, Kier, three times a week and they did an 'exemplary job'.

The council agreed to discuss the matter at its next general purposes committee meeting.
