Residents of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk will have the chance to show their support for the RAF when personnel from Marham exercise the Freedom of the Borough on Wednesday.

The event is usually held in King’s Lynn in June, but operational duties meant it was postponed.

The Freedom of the Borough parade comes during the same week as the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Britain was marked with a service and Spitfire flypast over Lynn on Monday.

Borough mayor, Geoffrey Wareham said he was looking forward to the opportunity to show his support and is urging people of the borough to join him.

He said: “I am very grateful to the personnel of RAF Marham for finding the time and rescheduling the Freedom of the Borough parade in what has again been an exceptionally busy year for them. They have demonstrated once again their resilience and unique capabilities throughout our troubled world. I feel it is extremely important that we all continue to take time to organise, participate and show our appreciation for all members of our armed services. I have no doubt that the parade will be one of the highlights of my mayoral calendar and I feel privileged to inspect the personnel whilst on parade.”

The parade will march on from Common Staithe Quay and form up on the Tuesday Market Place at 11.40 am. The civic procession, led by the mayor’s staffbearer, swordbearer and macebearers, will arrive just before noon when there will be a flypast of aircraft from RAF Marham.

The mayor will take the salute and inspect the parade, before addressing the personnel and spectators on the Tuesday Market Place with a response given by Station Commander, Group Captain David Cooper.

The Band of the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, will also take part in the event.

The Tuesday Market Place and Common Staithe Quay will be roped off from early Wednesday morning. The parking bays around Tuesday Market Place will also be closed until after the parade. For security reasons any cars still in the roped off areas after this will be removed by police.

Also, for security reasons, there may be some brief intermittent road closures in Tuesday Market Place and the junctions surrounding it, along with Page Stair Lane and Water Lane, between 9am and 12.30pm. The road around Tuesday Market Place will be closed from 11.30am for one hour.
