A twenty-strong team of volunteers from a US air base have helped transform a charity's tucked away 'corner of paradise'.

Men and women from RAF Lakenheath mowed, chopped, hoed and preened the garden at the Riversdale Centre in Thetford, a charity which helps adults with various difficulties.

The garden provides visitors to the centre - who can often suffer with severe mental problems - with an area of peace and quiet.

The work was carried out as part of the base's volunteer programme, with airmen helping out in the local community.

Dwayne Cox, who works in the RAF Lakenheath communications team, said: 'It's been good to come down and help out here - it's definitely better than doing nothing on a sunny day.

'We've managed to get a lot down and I'm glad we could be of help to the centre.'

Pauline Quadling, centre manager said their efforts had been 'incredible'.

'We can't carry on without volunteers and the help we've been given today is amazing.

'This garden should now be okay for the rest of the year - I'd like to take the opportunity to thank the base for their help,' she said.

Thetford mayor, Sylvia Armes, was also on hand to pay a visit to the volunteers.

She thanked them for their help, saying the centre was 'important to Thetford'.
