An American serviceman has died after her car collided with a tree in Suffolk.

The woman, who is in her 20s and was based at RAF Lakenheath, died at the scene of the incident on the B1106 at Elveden.

The incident took place at around 12.10am yesterday morning with Suffolk police confirming that a blue Honda Civic collided with a tree around a mile north of the Center Parcs entrance.

RAF Lakenheath confirmed the airman was from the 48th Fighter Wing.

They said the identity of the airmen would not be released until 24 hours after next of kin have been informed.

East of England Ambulance Service crews attended but the woman died at the scene.

Police have confirmed she was the only person in the car.

A spokesperson for the ambulance said: 'We were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Elveden at 0.15am this morning.

'A rapid response vehicle, ambulance officer, two ambulances and the East Anglian Air Ambulance rapid response vehicle attended the scene.

'Despite the best efforts of all involved, the patient sadly died.'

A Thetford-based crew from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.

The road was closed for a time for police investigations.

RAF Lakenheath is the largest US Air Force-operated base in England. Currently, 4,500 active duty military members are stationed at the base.

Police are asking any witnesses to the crash to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101 quoting CAD 4 of November 24.
