The husband of the woman whose car hit scaffolding at North Walsham said they felt lucky to have escaped serious injury - but added that it was a “mystery” why their car took a sudden left turn.
John Wilson-Smith and his wife Jenny were heading for their North Walsham home after lunch at The Saracen’s Head at Wolterton when the accident happened at Angel Court on Aylsham Road at about 3.30pm on Sunday.
The couple’s silver Peugeot Bipper estate was damaged in the accident, and police and scaffolding experts were at the scene into the evening as it was made safe.
Today, Mr Wilson-Smith said: “Jen was driving, and we got as far as the traffic lights where the road narrows. We were just waiting for the lights to change when, quite abruptly, the car went sideways into the railings around Angel Court.
“We cannot work out what happened at all. Fortunately it was very low-speed contact. If it had been any greater speed, it might have brought the scaffolding down on us.”
Members of the public came to help the couple, including Mr Wilson-Smith, who was trapped inside the car.
He added: “It was quite extraordinary. There is nothing to suggest why it happened.”
