An excited puppy had to be rescued from a river after leaping over a wall into the water.

Harley, a nine-month-old chihuahua cross, only arrived at his new home in Great Yarmouth yesterday.

But when owner Danny Shaw opened the front door this morning the curious canine dashed outside and ended up in the River Yare, near Kings scrap yard.

Rather than leaping in after him Danny called 999 and the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston inshore lifeboat was launched to rescue the young pup.

Danny said: “As I opened the front door Harley saw a chance to have a run for freedom however, he didn’t know the river was just over the wall.

“When Harley jumped over into the water I didn’t know what to do. At first I thought jump in to get him then thought that wouldn’t be a good idea because then we would both be in the river, so I called 999.”

The lifeboat, carrying crew members Gavin Bennett, Michael Newbury and helmsman Andrew Mason, was soon on scene and the team quickly managed to scoop up the little dog.

Michael said: “He was very frightened and shaking so I tried to scoop him up in my helmet at first.

“When we got alongside of him I managed to hold him while Gavin got a grip on him and he was pulled into the boat.”

The lifeboat returned to the station where it was met by Harley’s very grateful owner.

Danny said: “I can’t thank the crew enough, they do a fantastic job. I think I will have to rename the dog lucky from now on because that’s what he is. Very lucky.”
