The people of Lowestoft are being urged to attend a public meeting tonight to discuss the need for a third traffic crossing for the town over Lake Lothing.

Businessman Peter Colby and Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Waveney Bob Blizzard are hosting the meeting at the Hotel Victoria from 7pm.

They will be setting out the potential benefits of Mr Colby’s £30m scheme to build a tidal barrage crossing over Lake Lothing, which is based on Dutch polder dams.

Tonight’s meeting comes after Suffolk County Council launched a consultation on plans to build a new crossing, with three possible options being looked at. However, Mr Colby, who runs Sprowston-based Peter Colby Commercials, and Mr Blizzard say action is needed now to build a crossing, otherwise the town will continue to suffer from congestion problems.

In a message to the people of Lowestoft, Mr Colby and Mr Blizzard said: “The town is on the brink of crisis. Please come and make your voice heard. Help save Lowestoft before it’s too late.”

It will be the third public meeting the pair have held and they will also discuss Waveney District Council’s area action plan for the Lake Lothing and Outer Harbour area.

  • The original UKIP motion to Suffolk CC in Dec '13 called for the construction of a crossing of Lake Lothing, allowing continuous traffic movement, as a priority. This was jointly amended by Labour & Conservatives affirming the long term commitment (not priority) of Labour & Conservatives (party political point scoring), to the principle (not construction) of a crossing ( no mention of continuous flow ). This has allowed WDCSCC to focus on alternative sites for another bascule bridge, NOT the Colby lock & barrage proposal. We now have yet another expensive feasibility study, and this is probably all we will get. Thanks Labour. Bob Blizzard will still be holding more more of these "successful" meetings as part of his re-election campaign five years from now. Bill Mountford - UKIP Group Leader Suffolk CC

  • We have a vanity project in the form of a new town-hall that we don't need whilst what we do need, a new bridge, is subject to an ongoing fudge. Perhaps the the new bridge should be called the Colin Law Memorial Bridge, that way we'll have it within years, sorted!

  • The third crossing for Lowestoft is long overdue. The ongoing problems caused by the old bascule bridge have almost crippled this town. This has stifled growth, and cost businesses and the local townsfolk dearly. It has had a negative affect on inward investment, tourism and local retail trade. Peter Colby's proposed tidal barrage scheme has been proven to work in Holland. This could also help prevent further disastrous flooding such as that which occurred recently in town causing serious problems for many businesses, and the local community. Many businesses and residents have barely recovered from this, the last thing they need is to be faced with the ongoing risk of further flooding from the next tidal surge. Something needs to be done now. Tonights meeting and Peter Colby's proposals could well provide the answers and solutions.
