Around 1,000 homes and businesses have been hit by a power cut in Wisbech this afternoon.

The power went off at around 3pm leaving much of the town without power and businesses with no phones as modern systems are dependent on electricity.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: “At about 3.05pm today, 1,332 customers in Wisbech town centre experienced an interruption to their power supplies because of a problem on the underground electricity distribution network.

“UK Power Networks engineers restored supplies to 120 customers at 3.14pm and continue to work as quickly and as safely as possible to restore power to the remaining customers.

“We appreciate how difficult it can be to lose power and would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
