What do you think? Tesco awaits decision on its application for a 24-hour alcohol licence at new Drayton store

Villagers fear drunkenness and vandalism will increase if Tesco’s application for a 24-hour licence to sell alcohol at its new store is approved.

The supermarket chain is seeking a licence to sell alcoholic drinks at its shop in Fakenham Road, Drayton, from Broadland District Council.

Tesco insists its staff are well-trained and it has many years of experience of having off-licences in its stores.

But several letters have been sent to the authority calling for the proposal to be rejected. Objectors include the area’s Home Watch coordinator, councillors and a pilot, who notes late-night noise could compromise his sleep and subsequently flight safety.

Roger Foulger, Broadland councillor for Drayton South, said the opening hours were intended to be 6am to midnight, and the licence should be restricted until 11pm.

Margaret Gallant, of Fakenham Road, wrote: “We feel this move would be likely to increase unsocial behaviour in the area.”

Another villager said they totally opposed the 24-hour, seven days a week licence application due to “the inevitable drunkenness and vandalism which will occur”.

Morgan’s Motor Engineers, in Fakenham Road, added: “We are convinced that this will bring rowdy, unsociable behaviour to the area and as our business premises are so nearby we fear break-ins and damage to our premises.”

Tesco’s application states: “We are a national retailer that sells alcohol as part of a broad offering of goods and services. We have held off-licences in our stores for many years and are an approved British Institute of inn-keeping examination centre.”

A decision will be taken on the issue on October 8. No recommendations have been put forward for the store, which is at the site of the former Budgens shop.
