Council tax set to rise in West Norfolk

Council tax in West Norfolk, as well as fees and charges for services and parking, is set to rise under budget plans for the new financial year.

West Norfolk council’s ruling cabinet has agreed proposals to increase council tax of a Band D property to £121.37, a £4.50 increase from £116.37. The recommendation will now be passed to the full council to approve.

The report states that despite the increase, the cumulative increase in a Band D charge has risen by just 7.45pc since April 2005, when the charge was £108.67.

It added: “The average cumulative increase in council tax for shire districts areas in England over the same period 2005/2006 to 2017/2018 has been 62.39pc.”

Cabinet chairman and council leader Brian Long said the increase was the lowest in Norfolk, adding: “We are very proud of our record of percentage increases.

“We pledged to keep council tax as low as we could. The yardstick has been moved, previously we had given support not to increase council tax but now we are budgeting to rely more on ourselves rather than nationally.

“As an authority we have cost pressures in all the services we deliver. They are physically costing us more money.”

The report also details proposed increases to car parking charges from April 2018 in council-run car parks, stating that car parking charges were last increased in April 2016 and evening charges have remained the same level since it was introduced 10 years ago.

In King’s Lynn, a monthly season ticket currently costs £37.50 but could rise to £40 by April, whereas an annual ticket could increase by £50 from £350 to £400.

For the multi-storey car park in St James’ Street, a new season ticket will be introduced costing £800.

In Hunstanton, a 12-month season ticket could increase from £200 to £220.

Brown bin composting service is also to increase from £52 to £54, cremation fees is set to rise by £12.50 and all in other service areas the fees and charges have been set to increase on average by 3.4pc.

The budget proposals will be put forward for approval at a full council meeting on Thursday, February 22.
