A scheme to convert part of a house in Great Ryburgh in to a fish and chip shop has been approved.

The plans for 19 Station Road received 72 comments of support from local residents, who were keen to see additional jobs and amenities in the village.

The proposals were given the green light by North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) development committee on Thursday, December 13, despite objections from a neighbour, who said the business would create unacceptable levels of noise and smell.

Speaking to the committee, applicant Christopher Buxton said: “The whole point of the change of use is to modernise the property and offer a new service to the village, to encourage Ryburgh to remain a sustainable and well populated village.”

Mr Buxton, who lets affordable property in Great Ryburgh, said the additional income would help support his family and property business through a difficult economic period.

At least 14 objections were made to the scheme, which doesn’t include any space for customer parking. Objectors raised concerns about highway safety, litter, fire risk and detriment to the amenity of nearby residents.

Neighbour Natasha Felmingham told the development committee: “The smell and noise will impact on neighbouring properties and there will be an impact on highway safety caused by customers and deliveries.

“It will impact on our daily lives. Sitting in the garden, drying washing and opening windows will all be affected by the smell from fried food.”

The application was unanimously approved with the condition that the opening times could only be from 11am to 9.30pm.
