A town council which is looking to move offices is set to launch a study into a new site – which was the subject of a planning row earlier this year.

Wymondham Town Council is proposing to commission a feasibility study to investigate building offices on Kings Head Meadow.

The land was at the centre of a dispute when the council considered selling the land for an Asda supermarket earlier this year. Campaigners fought to preserve the site which is home to Wymondham Town Football Club.

The town council offices have been based in a grade II listed building, which is owned by South Norfolk council, on Middleton Street since 1974.

Clerk Trevor Gurney said: “The current council offices were first built to be a private residence, but the reality is that it is not fit for purpose any more.” Mr Gurney said the council had been looking to move for around 10 years.

“There isn’t anywhere else to go to,” he added. “The town is full of old buildings and if we were to use one, it would need a considerable amount of adaptation. For a number of years the town council has tried to find an alternative option.”

The proposed study will look at planning permission, office requirements, design and indicative costs. These would then be compared with the current premises.

The council is proposing a budget of £6,000 to cover the cost of the study.

The motion is proposed by councillor Colin Foulger and is seconded by councillor Michael Gibbins and will be discussed at a full council meeting on Tuesday, August 7.
