The Royal British Legion must “go the extra mile” to help Norwich safeguard its valuable community asset the Jubilee Hall, a government minister has warned.
Minister for civil society Nick Hurd told parliament that while it was not for the government to intervene in the decision of a charity, however unpopular, he hoped the organisation would act.
During a Westminster debate, called by Norwich North MP Chloe Smith, a front page of the Norwich Evening News backing the campaign to save the legion’s headquarters from being sold, was held up to demonstrate the strength of support.
The Aylsham Road club is threatened with closure in the new year because legion bosses have decided keeping it open would pose an “unacceptable risk” to charitable funds.
