A poultry farm has submitted plans to build a 204-panel solar farm to help bring down its electricity bills.

The application would allow the land at Kilima Farm on Main Dereham Road in Colkirk, near Fakenham, to still be used for grazing.

According to a design and access statement submitted with the planning application, the solar farm would be close to agricultural buildings at the farm, which would use most of the energy produced.

It said the applicants had investigated building a wind turbine, which would produce more electricity, but objections from the Ministry of Defence about the impact on radar systems meant they could not go ahead.

Breckland Council’s tree and countryside consultant wrote: “This single row of panels is unlikely to have a significant detrimental impact on the landscape.”

Nearby Horningtoft Parish Council is due to consider its response to the application on January 15, after which Breckland Council will decide whether to approve the plans.
