The public is being asked to come up with street names with a certain je ne sais quoi to help put Dereham’s friendship with its French twin town firmly on the map.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The suggestions are intended for two or three new roads set to be built on the site of the former swimming pool.

Dereham has already marked its links with its German twin town by calling the road beside the Assembly Rooms Ruthen Place, and is now seeking similar recognition for Caudebec-les-Elbeuf, its French partner in Upper Normandy.

Town councillor Ann Bowyer said: “The French have named some roads with an English connotation. They had a complex of flats in an area which they named Abbey Road and they named all the blocks of flats after English 1960s bands.

“They have already done that with us in mind, so it only seems polite for us to return the compliment.”

Town councillors have been told the names have to be one word, ruling out Caudebec-les-Elbeuf Road, and they could not use the word Caudebec because of possible confusion with the town’s existing Quebec Road.

Ms Bowyer, who also sits on the town’s twinning association, has come up with a number of suggestions, including Bec Road, because it has the same meaning of a stream in English and French, Flaubert or Maupassant after the 19th century French writers who come from northern France, or Norman or Normandy Road or Way.

She had also considered Seine, after the river that Caudebec lies on, but thought it was not specific enough to the town.

Alors, Rue 66? Site d'une swimming pool, avec l'inondation: Rue-du-jardin-sous-le-lac-pour-beaucoup-de-mois-pendant-que-les-councils-s'accusent.
