Ambitious plans that could see a McDonald’s and 51-bedroom hotel built in Dereham have received a boost after town councillors voiced their support.

The proposals for the former Cemex concrete products factory site on Yaxham Road, near the A47 and Tesco, would create more than 150 new jobs.

Speaking at Tuesday’s town council meeting to discuss plans, deputy mayor Kate Millbank said: “It’s right at the entrance to Dereham and I am concerned that if we were to be negative to it, that site will remain as it is.”

Former mayor Michael Fanthorpe said he was concerned the designs looked too American for a quaint Norfolk town.

Tim Birt said the council should support the application because of the new jobs it would create.

Other councillors said the plans would bring badly-needed extra overnight accommodation to the town.

Robert Hambidge said the development could hurt hotels in the town centre, but others said it would attract a different clientele.

The councillors unanimously agreed to support the planning application, but raised concerns about access to the site.

Breckland Council’s planning committee will make a final decision on the plans at a later date.

  • What does the former Mayor think of Strikes... and our wonderful Leisure Centre? Is their design in keeping with a 'quaint' Norfolk town?... And does it really matter?

  • Does Dereham really need such eyesores? Will this attract people to stay or will the cheap burger dive put people off staying in Dereham.

  • The only problem will be the increase in cars. It is busy as it is.
