People in a Norwich street say they are struggling to park outside their homes, because two thirds of their road is covered by permit parking - but not where they live.

Permit parking was introduced in part of College Road, in Norwich's Golden Triangle, plus a number of nearby roads, earlier this year.

The section of College Road from Unthank Road to The Avenues is now covered by permits, which people buy from Norwich City Council.

But between Avenue Road and Earlham Road, College Road is not covered by permit parking.

And unhappy residents say that means the spaces outside their homes are being taken up by people who live elsewhere.

A group of people who live in College Road recently presented a petition to the Norwich Highways Agency Committee, calling for permit parking to be extended to the entire road.

Prof Chris Edwards, who presented the petition, said: 'There has been a marked increase in the number of non-residents parking on the portion of College Road for which permit parking is now requested, as well as a commensurate increase in vehicular traffic.

'This creates considerable inconvenience for residents as well as a risk to road safety, particularly in respect of children from the three schools in the immediate vicinity.

'The majority of residents of the area covered by the petition are at a loss to understand why the council chose to institute a partial permit parking scheme.'

Nigel Chapman, who lives in the street, said it has made it increasingly difficult for people in the upper part of College Road to park outside their homes.

But John Fisher, chairman of the Norwich Highways Agency Committee said the council team which considers permit parking was 'fully committed' to working on other schemes around the city and would be 'unable to progress any additional changes until next financial year at the absolute earliest'.

Hugo Malik, Labour councillor for Nelson ward, said 70pc of people in the northern section of College Road said they did not want permit parking when asked in 2015.

But he said his party was conducting a fresh parking permit survey in the area, including College Road.

He said they would pass on the findings to officers at City Hall.
