Whitehall doesn’t know best when it comes to the decisions that affect our local communities.
In Norwich, we know where future jobs in the area are likely to be based, we know the skills that we need to help local people access those jobs, and we know what infrastructure our city needs.
It stands to reason that locally we should have the power and the freedom we need to unlock our growth potential. That’s what a City Deal is all about. There is no ‘one size fits all’ for a City Deal. Every city has its own strengths, its own unique offer, and therefore its own case to secure freedoms from central government.
For Norwich, our world-class reputation for research and innovation needs to be exploited to deliver more jobs and bring further economic gains locally.
Our City Deal will make the most of the potential to grow business opportunities around the Norwich Research Park, the digital creative sector, and aviation around Norwich International Airport.
In total, more than 19,000 jobs can be created by 2026, supported by our City Deal. In recognition of Norwich’s progress towards a City Deal, we have already gained support that otherwise would not be open to us. Earlier this year, we won £3.7m from the government to improve cycle links in the city. But the biggest gains are still to come.
It will become cheaper for Norwich to borrow up to £80m to deliver the infrastructure that we need to grow.
Local businesses will get the help they need to work together, to trade, to secure grants and investment, and to benefit from the expertise in our local universities. Young people will get the support they need to access jobs and training.
A new skills programme, involving employers, will lead to more investment in opportunities such as apprenticeships and graduate internships.
The East of England is one of the fastest growing economic powerhouses of the UK, with job creation at its highest rate since 2007.
Norwich is a key driver of that growth, and with a City Deal we are being equipped with the tools we need to be the jewel in the region’s crown.
