It’s an injury which England stars Wayne Rooney and David Beckham know all about, but now Norwich North MP Chloe Smith has joined the list of people who have suffered broken metatarsals.
The city MP took a tumble in the corridors of the Houses of Parliament yesterday (Wednesday) and x-rays at St Thomas’ Hospital in London confirmed she had fractured a fifth metatarsal in her foot.
Miss Smith, who is an economic secretary to the treasury, will return to hospital on Monday for further treatment, but has had to cancel her scheduled appointments in Norwich tomorrow. (Friday)
The Conservative MP said: “I was walking through Parliament and darting around quite quickly, when I fell. I went home on Wednesday night and put my leg up with ice around it.
“But I went to St Thomas Hospital yesterday and they’ve told me I’ve fractured my metatarsal. I’ve got to go back on Monday where I’ll probably be given crutches, so I’ll be hobbling around for a bit.”
She joked that, if her foot is put in a cast when she returns to hospital on Monday, she would try to persuade Prime Minister David Cameron to sign the plaster.
Miss Smith was still at work in Westminster yesterday, but said she would not be able to attend the events she had planned in Norwich tomorrow.
Among the events she was forced to pull out of was the launch of City College Norwich’s StartUp Lounge, a new facility to encourage students to be more entrepreneurial.
Supporters of Scottish champions Celtic are in Norwich ahead of the Adam Drury testimonial game tonight.
