The Liberal Democrat MP has been named as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Mr Clegg - a role which will see Mr Wright attend cabinet meetings and support his leader by acting as a main point of contact for other parliamentarians.

Mr Wright said: “It’s a huge honour to be appointed by Nick Clegg as his PPS. I look forward to playing a greater role in supporting his work, and having a view of the workings of the cabinet and the heart of the coalition government.

“While I look forward to starting in this new position, my work for Norwich will always be my first priority.”

Mr Wright will continue in his role as the Liberal Democrat spokesman on education in the House of Commons.

Mr Wright, who won the Norwich South seat after defeating former Home Secretary Charles Clarke at the last general election, previously served as PPS to the schools minister David Laws MP, and also to the former children and families minister Sarah Teather MP.

  • Maybe it's the same thing that his mate Lord Nash says to all those schools in Norfolk that are in special measures as he forces them to become academies? "You have a voice, but you don't have a choice.". (True story as it happens - bullyboy Paul Docherty from the DfE uses it as his mantra whenever he drops in on a Governing Body who might not see things in the same light as he does....)

  • Norwich won't come first. Just like Norman Lamb when he was in this position he'll not only have to vote everytime with the government he'll have to justify it as Clegg's mouth piece too. Norwich - who will boot him out next year - or the paymasters who give him a bumper salary and nice cars? Tough one, hey.

  • Is this the same Clegg who said that there were too many aids?? He has a very large number of them now - not much good it does him. Perhaps it is because it makes him feel important? In the forthcoming EU elections he may have plenty of former MEPs available.
