Labour gave the Greens a run for their money in Wensum ward in last year’s elections and, with two seats up for grabs this time around, this could be a ward to watch.

There are two seats available because of the resignation of Green city councillor Steven Altman, after he was jailed for arson earlier this year.

Last May Lucy Galvin held onto the seat for the Greens with a majority of 167, but there was an impressive showing by Labour’s Vaughan Thomas, who attracted 1,208 votes compared to Mrs Galvin’s 1,375.

Mr Thomas is standing again, while Labour have also put forward Sam Earl, who used to be a caseworker for former Norwich South MP Charles Clarke.

Neil Blunt and Caroline Brimblecombe will be trying to keep Wensum in Green hands, with Jess Hallybone and Helen Whitworth up for the Liberal Democrats and Simon Harrison and Hannah Gascoigne representing the Conservatives.

In University ward, city council leader Brenda Arthur finds herself up against the same opponents which her Labour colleague Sarah Grenville comfortably saw off this time last year.

Robbie Laird (Green Party), Tom Cannon (Conservative) and Andrew Wright (Liberal Democrats) will have to work hard in a ward where Labour have long been strong.

Ahead of these elections (and the two by-elections in Catton Grove and Wensum triggered by resignations), the make-up of the city council was Labour (18), Green Party (15), Liberal Democrats (4), Conservatives (2).

Although no party has overall control, Labour run the council as a minority administration.
