More than 1,000 homes in the city area will benefit from 'free' electricity, after cabinet members agreed to a PV for Free scheme.

The scheme, similar to one rolled out in Lakenham in 2014, will see at least 1,000 council houses fitted with solar panels, free of charge.

Around 5,000 homes have been identified as possible locations for the panels, which will be installed onto suitable houses free of charge to the tenants.

The tenants will then be able to make use of any energy generated by the panels, with any left over being put into a feed-in-tariff for the company that installs them.

However, the intentions won't be acted on immediately, with the council yet to identify a suitable applicant to deliver the panels.

Gail Harris, cabinet member for social housing, said: 'While we still await the right application, our desire remains the same.'
