A city centre pub will discover next week whether it will be granted permission to place tables and chairs outside its doors.

The Bell Hotel has asked Norwich City Council for permission to put the tables and chairs in Orford Hill.

The JD Wetherspoon pub wants to put five tables and chairs in the street.

The pub chain had asked for permission to use the tables and chairs between 8am and 11pm seven days a week, but Norfolk police has asked for the furniture to stop being used at 9pm.

However, there have been two objections to the application, including one from the Example hair salon on the other side of the street, raising concern that customers could be intimidated by “drunk and boisterous” people.

A tenant who lives nearby has also objected, fearing anti-social behaviour.

Michelle Bartram, licensing officer at Norfolk Constabulary, said in her report to the city council: “Following discussions with the management of the premises, I am satisfied that the use of these tables and chairs will be for meals and coffees only.

“No glasses will be allowed “to be taken off the premises and into this area and if any alcohol is requested to be consumed here, this will be decanted into plastic first.”

The applicant has said that at least one member of staff will supervise the outside area while it is in use, that CCTV cameras will operate in the outside area and that the tables and chairs will be removed when not in use.

Members of the city council’s regulatory committee will decide whether to allow the application when they meet on Tuesday.
