Planners look set to get tough and set a three-month time limit for a north Norfolk pub to change its extension roof tiles.

Slate tiles were used to cover a rear extension at The White Horse, Overstrand, instead of the clay pantiles required by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) planners.

An officer’s report to Thursday’s NNDC development committee said more than 18 months had passed since pub owner Darren Walsgrove was told pantiles must be used.

Officers are recommending taking enforcement action and refusing Mr Walsgrove’s application to have the pantiles condition removed.

His agent argued that the slate tiles had “weathered” and now created a contemporary “pleasing link” between the Victorian pub and a period flint barn.

According to the NNDC report the finished extension, granted permission in 2009, “differed in many respects to that approved”.

In January last year planners granted an application to keep it as it was, but listed a string of conditions, including repainting the render and eaves, and replacing the slates.

The report said the pub was in the Overstrand Conservation Area, and held a prominent position in the village. The extension had a stark and harsh appearance, which contrasted with the host building.

  • I'm a great believer that people should comply with planning requirements, but perhaps the South Norfolk District Council planners should apply the same rules to the travellers who have created various homes for themselves without planning permission around Easton and Marlingford. They seem to prefer to ignore and hope the problem will go away (it won't) rather than actually go and deal with it.
