Two Norfolk MPs have signed an open letter calling on the government not to “duck the challenge” of properly regulating the press.

Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman and North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham were among 42 Tory members to put their name to the letter.

It says that the current proposal being put forward by the newspaper industry for a strengthened form of self regulation is “destined to fail”.

The letter adds: “No one wants our media to be controlled by the government but, to be credible, any new regulator must be independent of the press as well as from politicians.”
