Norfolk and Suffolk must not be a “dumping ground” for terror suspects - MPs

East Anglian MPs reacted with fury to suggestions that terror suspects should be relocated to Norwich or Ipswich under proposed new powers to break up suspected terror networks.

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, said the city should not be used as some kind of “dumping ground” for the rest of the country after former Labour cabinet minister Hazel Blears called for a return of powers which had seen suspects sent to Ipswich or Norwich.

The prime minister announced yesterday that he could bring back the powers to move suspects away from friends and families, which had been place under control orders, which were brought in by the last Labour government in 2005, but abolished in 2012 and replaced with less stringent TPims.

Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey said she was shocked by Ms Blears’ comments that terror suspects should be sent to Ipswich or Norwich.

“We live in a peaceful county, crime is falling and we don’t need the aggravation of hosting potential terrorism suspects. Frankly there are higher police budgets elsewhere and they shouldn’t be dumped on Suffolk.”

  • @SteelyDan. Well, if you like, I can copy all my comments from that Archant article to this article as it is obvious that you have not understood that it is called the Goldsmith Steet redevelopment area. I will like to remind you that there are still six homes standing in Greyhound Opening facing managed lawns, shrubs and trees where people are still living and have lived there for over 30 years which are not effected by the Goldsmith street redevelopment area. You will read in one of my posts that I mentioned that the former premises of Alderman Clarke House (HFE) home which occupies over a third of the Goldsmith Street redevelopment area site was emptied of its residents by Norfolk County Council (which I understand was a Conservative adminstration at the time) who then requested a company called Camelot to secure the premises by finding "guardians" from the general population to live in the premises. They lived in the bedsits and the common room-lounge areas for several months. They all had to be vetted.

  • Oh dear,oh dear WHIPSNADE. You really have a problem with names on this site. No, I am not John or Storm. I seem to have pushed your " button". Is it that you just like to insult people ,yet cannot abide to be treated in the same manner? My early remarks seem to be well founded. Do make a point.

  • Sorry Ray we've been through this one before. The Archant report referred to it as Greyhound and perhaps your argument should be with them. Other than having been to the church on the main road and the Fat Cat further down, I don't know the area. Interestingly I have just returned from a weeks holiday in Holland and saw many similar buildings to the proposal. This sort of thing works there but will not here ,mainly because of the dreadful population that we have. In Holland everyone seems to cycle and car usage is at a minimum. Also public transport is brilliant. We are decades of years behind them.

  • Norwich and Ipswich and other towns such as Yarmouth are used as dumping grounds for all sorts of people regardless of colour, creed, nationality or whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing. The common link is that they have to be housed by the state and they are being moved from prosperous areas to here where property is cheap, those who work suddenly find they can not as they are moved away from their jobs. This is why we are seeing housing developments which would not be viable without state support. The shame is that anyone who is moved in will be assumed to be a terrorist

  • @steely Dan. Get your facts right. It is not the Greyhound Opening redevelopment. It is called the Goldsmith Street redevelopment area. If you like I can use this entire thread to repeat exactly what I said on another thread. The Goldsmith Street redevelopment area is the correct name for the site which comprises the former Alderman Clarke House (Home For the Elderly) which was administered by NORFOLK County Council; the former fourteen lock up garages; the former sheltered housing of Goldsmith Street and Greyhound Opening and the former four workshops of Haslips OpeningClose, and the vacant car parking spaces on Exeter Street and the extension of Portway Place onto Midland Street.

A fuss about nothing.

  • This one is straight forward, deportrefuse entry to these people, no appeals, no messing. where they hold a British passport, lock'em up they've broken laws. The only reason they carry on as they do is because we as a nation are not hard enough, our goverment is a soft touch and these people know it
