Watchdogs at Norfolk County Council Trading Standards are warning people to be on their guard about telephone cold callers claiming to be from their own organisation.

The service has been contacted by a resident in North Norfolk who has twice been telephone cold called by someone claiming to be from Trading Standards, who tries to trick them out of personal details.

The cold caller states they are looking into ‘financial scams’ and need the consumers’ bank details to ‘help get money back’.

Trading Standards officers said when the resident questioned the caller about where they were calling from and what money they were helping to get back, the person on the other end of the line became abusive and hung up.

A spokesman said: “Trading Standards advises always to be very wary if telephone cold called and never to give out or confirm personal information or bank details without being sure who you are dealing with.

“No genuine Trading Standards officer will cold call asking you to provide bank details, if you receive one of these calls hang up and contact us via our partners the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06.”
