Norfolk County Council under no overall control after UKIP gain seats

And three of the highest profile members of the cabinet on the Conservative controlled county council have been beaten by UKIP candidates.

UKIP took seats from Graham Plant, cabinet member for planning and transportation, in Breydon and Barry Stone, cabinet member for cultural services and communications in Lothinglan.

Ann Steward, cabinet member for economic development, was another casualty to UKIP - in Swaffham.

The Conservatives have 40 divisions, Labour 14, UKIP 15, Lib Dems 10 and the Greens 4. One independent, Richard Bird, has triumphed in Sheringham but Conservative Tom Garrod saw off the threat of independent Stephen Heard in Wroxham.

UKIP, who had just one county councillor before these elections, has scored notable victories, including Holt, Gayton and Nar Valley, Watton and East Flegg, They took 11 seats from the Conservatives.

County council leader Bill Borrett survived a strong push from UKIP in Elmham and Mattishall, while Cliff Jordan, cabinet member for efficiencies hung on in Yare and All Saints.

The Conservatives had a majority of 34 going into these elections, but today's results have whittled that away, so the council is now under no overall control.

It will mean a weekend of discussions between political parties, but the likelihood is that the Conservatives will look to run a minority administration.

One division, in Thetford West, went to four recounts, with one vote between Labour and UKIP. The seat was won by Peter Georgiou, which meant UKIP became the official opposition.

Mr Borrett, current Conservative leader of Norfolk County Council, acknowledged: 'UKIP have had a very strong result and it's not what I expected. All credit to them - they are now the second largest party on Norfolk County Council.

'We now need a bit of time for reflection. All the various political groups will be meeting to discuss who will lead them. There needs to be discussions with them and when that has happened we need to talk about what happens with no party in overall control.

'Within the next week we should have a clearer idea of what's going to happen.'

Compared to 2009, the party gains and losses are: Conservatives lost 20 seats, UKIP gained 14, Labour gained 11, Liberal Democrats lost three, Greens lost three and an independent gained one seat.

In Norwich, former Norwich City Council leader Steve Morphew has taken Catton Grove from Conservatives for Labour. Labour also took Town Close and Sewell from the Greens.

The Greens were pleased, however, by their victory in Thorpe Hamlet, where Adrian Dearnley deposed Phil Hardy, who had defected from the Greens to the Conservatives in mid-term.

A total of 29.9pc people voted in the borough of Great Yarmouth resulting in five UKIP seats, three Labour and one Conservative seats.

The share of the vote was Conservative 32.6pc, UKIP 23.47pc, Labour 22.75pc, Liberal Democrat 10.97pc, Green 6.55pc, Independent 3.27pc, Christian People's Alliance 0.13pc, United People's Party 0.02pc and no description on ballot paper 0.22pc.

The county electorate was 670,383 and the total number of votes cast was 215,465. The overall percentage turnout was 32.14pc.
