Thirty new jobs are to be created when a new store opens in Norwich’s Castle Mall next week.
Poundworld has announced it will open its first store in the city in the shopping centre at 10am on Thursday, March 27.
The new store will be next to Peacock’s and Boots and will create 30 new jobs.
Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our first store at Castle Mall Shopping Centre, creating 30 new retail jobs for the city.
“As a British family-run business, we have a loyal following of over two million bargain hunters that shop with us nationwide every week.
“We’re sure that our new store in Norwich will be a big hit with bargain shoppers in the city.”
Bosses at Yorkshire-based Poundworld, which was founded in 1997 and has 240 stores across the UK, say the store will stock more than 5,000 products priced at £1.
Bosses at Castle Mall recently hailed a decision to allow a revamp of the main entrance to the shopping centre, saying it will unlock further investment and attract more jobs to the city.
The £1m revamp was approved in highly unusual circumstances, with the chairman of Norwich City Council’s planning committee using his casting vote to allow it to go ahead, just minutes after voting against it.
It was the third attempt by Castle Mall owners InfraRed had lodged an application for the Back Of The Inns entrance with Norwich City Council. City councillors rejected the first scheme and deferred a decision on a second one in December.
The developers said the new design - including an aluminium facade - took its cue from the city’s textiles industry.
Members of Norwich City Council’s planning committee voted five to refuse and five to approve, with two abstentions.
That left the casting vote with committee chairman David Bradford, who had just voted against it.
He “reluctantly” used his casting vote to vote for the application, despite his “personal dislike” of elements of the scheme.
Paul McCarthy, centre manager for Castle Mall, said the decision would unlock further investment in the centre, home to 870 jobs.
