A scheme to knock down Cromer’s old courthouse and police station and replace it with housing is facing a second rejection over its “inferior” design.

Developers McCarthy and Stone want to demolish the existing buildings on Holt Road and put up 34 retirement apartments with communal facilities.

Earlier this year a similar scheme for 35 apartments was turned down by North Norfolk District Council planning councillors over concerns about the cramped site and design.

A report to the same committee tomorrow, Thursday, says the plans are “largely the same”, on the same footprint but with an amended frontage.

The council’s conservation design and landscape manager says the 1938 court and police complex is distinctive and unique, while the planned homes were “quite oppressive, imposing and over assertive” and that if it was trying to pick up on local architectural style it had “signally failed.”

Cromer Preservation Society has renewed its objections over the “austere building of institutional design and no architectural merit” which overshadows the street scene - and which was not a worthy replacement for the current complex.

Officers are recommending refusal of the plan because it would harm the town’s conservation area.

  • I've not seen the plans, but surely 34 or 35 retirement homes is preferable to a semi-boarded up eyesore? Homes for elderly people make special sense when you (yes, you NNDC) factor in how convenient this development would be for the railway station and the supermarket which is bang opposite. I'd be very interested to see (as, I'm sure would the developers) an artists impression of just what WOULD be deemed acceptable on this site. Or are we happy to see tumbleweed continue to gather ad nauseam?
