Conservative Tony Adams, who has been a Broadland councillor in Hellesdon for 38 years, takes over the chain of office from Stuart Dunn.

Mr Adams was born in Exeter but moved to Norfolk when he was two years old. Much of his career was spent working for BT – between 1966 and 1995.

Mr Adams, who is also a county councillor, said: “I am very proud to be taking on this great honour. I will carry out my responsibilities to the best of my ability and look forward to meeting the people of Broadland over the coming year.”

Mr Adams has chosen The Dog’s Trust in Snetterton as the chairman’s charity for his year in office.

The Conservative-controlled council’s current leader, Andrew Proctor, remains in post, along with his existing cabinet.

Meanwhile, the opposition Liberal Democrat group has appointed a new leader for 2014/15.

Dan Roper, who represents Spixworth with St Faiths, succeeds Nich Starling as leader.

Mr Roper also a county councillor, where he is cabinet member for public protection. had been the Lib Dem’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Broadland, but has withdrawn.

Mr Starling said he had decided to step down as leader to concentrate on his own ward of Taverham North and to cope with the increasing workload of being a teacher.

He said: “The last three years, whilst I have been group leader of the Lib Dems, we have seen our group buck the national trend by gaining councillors, both in by-elections and through a senior Tory leaving the Conservatives to join our ranks. This is down to the fact that the Lib Dems have been a principled and disciplined opposition on Broadland.”

  • Don't worry folks. It is only to the position of Chairman that this critter has been elected. That involves wearing a tin necklace and spending taxpayers money and feeling frightfully important. It's buggins turn and he is certainly a buggins.

  • with so many threads not allowing comments, the EDP should not be surprised if people cross comment on other threads. Its an abominmation that those who support or oppose the NDR are prevented from making their views open in public, a tactic that will be mentioned to Inspector Hill as a collaborative effort by the EDP in support of one side against the other.

  • HJ you are sharper than me. I hadnt made that connection although you are quite right as Di.ckens has now admitted he was the sender of the emails that were sent to klwin. Broadland appears to now have a rather manipu.lative chairman.

  • Any councillor that ignored 65.516 people is not worth voting for, Tory Tony Adams did just that.

  • Forgot to remind readers that this man also accused people in west norfolk of vandalism and thre.atning behaviour towards councillors in April 11 resulting in those cllrs being to afraid to attend a cabinet scrutiny meeting despite no complaints being lodged with the police. Good luck residents of Broadland just the sort of person you should have at the helm!

  • D.ickens, you've been rather quiet of late old pal, isn't this chap one of your chums, he doesn't like Long and Daubney either, and a pro-incinerator supporter as long as it's not in his backyard.

  • I suspect that this photograph was taken thirty-eight years ago, when Cllr Adams was first elected to Broadland District Council. Shouldn't the EDP insist upon current photographs?
