Town to lose job centre at end of the year as funding expires

A careers guidance centre dedicated to helping young people in Lowestoft find their dream jobs is set to close at the end of the year.

The Mygo Centre, in Bevan Street East, is due to lose funding in December and will no longer be able to provide its walk-in services to the local community.

News of the impending closure follows yesterday’s announcement that MyGo’s Ipswich branch will be closing at the end of the month.

The centres are administered by Suffolk County Council (SCC) with money from specific grants - including the EU Social Fund.

A SCC spokesman said: “Funding will expire in December 2018 leaving it (MyGo Lowestoft) in the same position as Ipswich.”

However, the council is adamant it will continue to support the town’s young people.

Gordon Jones, cabinet member for children’s services, education and skills said: “At this point, we have not been able to secure additional funding for the future of this service in its current form.

“But I want to make it clear we continue to be committed to supporting local young people to secure a positive future.”

Mr Jones said some young people found a “community -based approach” is more effective than a walk-in service.

The council will provide some local community support through MyGo for those already with a coach and the service’s website would also be maintained for several more months.

He added: “There will be no loss of service for those who need support.”

Since opening in 2016 the Lowestoft centre has supported thousands of young people trying to find work.

Phil Aves, change manager at Lowestoft Rising – an organisation working to improve the town – played an instrumental role in the steering group which helped attract the service to the town.

He said: “We have been really pleased with what has been achieved here in Lowestoft so far and pay tribute to all the staff and partners that have made that happen.

“We will be having discussions locally to see if there is anyway we can help reserve a service that meets our local needs.

“We still have some nine months of operating time left and there may be other funding sources that can help is deliver a local service.”
