Line painters will have to make a return visit to North Walsham after incorrectly marking out a town-centre cycle lane.

The cycle lane, along Church Street, was repainted after recent resurfacing plus separate work by Anglian Water, but the new lines, confusingly, came to an end several metres short of the street's junction with Vicarage Street and Bacton Road.

Norfolk County Council was alerted to the problem by North Walsham county councillor Paul Morse and the town's mayor, Dave Robertson, who were concerned about road safety.

'It is dangerous because the cycle lane just disappears for a few yards so motorists entering Church Street don't know to expect cyclists coming towards them in a one-way street and get too far over to the right,' said Mr Morse.

After an initial inspection, a county engineer failed to see what the problem was but Mr Morse said he had met an engineer at the site this morning to point out his concerns and the engineer had agreed that action had to be taken to extend the markings, although the recent wet weather meant the council had a backlog of work so no date could be given for the repainting.
