Lifelong dog lover Nick Clancy has taken over as North Walsham Town Council’s new clerk.

Mr Clancy, 50, succeeds Margaret Foster, who has retired after 17 years in the role.

As he takes up one new post of responsibility, he will be stepping down from another – as secretary of the national Lhasa Apso Club – in order to focus on his new job.

He and his parents, Carolyn and Terry, have always had dogs but bought their first lhasa apso in 1985 and are registered at the Kennel Club under the name Clancaniter.

They have enjoyed some success at events around the country, including a place at Crufts, and a reserve challenge certificate and Kennel Club stud book number at another championship show. The family currently have five lhasa apsos and a chihuahua.

London-born Mr Clancy, of Valley Gardens, North Walsham, emigrated, aged six, to South Africa with his family. They returned in 1979, living in Essex until moving to Norfolk 11-and-a-half years ago.

A non-driver, he worked as a civil servant for 23 years, commuting to London by train, until a back problem meant that at the end of June last year it was no longer possible and he gave up the job.

His career began in what has evolved today into the Department for Communities and Local Government.

During the construction phase of the Channel Tunnel, he worked for the project’s safety secretariat, which involved meetings on both sides of the Channel.

Later roles included transport statistics, divisional budgeting at directorate level, and four years working in local government finance.

Mr Clancy has an English literature degree from the former Polytechnic of North London and is particularly keen on science fiction.

He loves classic rock and blues, particularly Led Zeppelin, and “dabbles” as a guitarist.
