Tax Dodgers: Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander will tell the Liberal Democrat annual conference today that the government will raise an extra £4bn in tax this year. The politician will claim the windfall is a result of government efforts to work out how the wealthy dodge tax using sophisticated avoidance schemes and havens. He will say: “Fair taxes in tough times means everyone playing by the same rule book, and everyone paying their fair share. “We have this message to the small minority of wealthy people who don’t play by the rules; we are coming to get you and you will pay your fair share.”

Speed limit: Party delegates in Brighton passed a motion yesterday to push for all roads in residential areas to have a speed limit of 20mph. They argued the move would make roads safer for pedestrians and encourage more people to use bicycles. Cambridge MP Julian Huppert said: “Moving towards a national 20mph limit in residential areas is the right thing to do to further lower our road fatality rate.”

Nurseries: Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg will today announce £100m to pay for new free nursery and childminder places. The money will be given to councils who will use it to either attract people to work in the childcare sector or to enable existing nurseries to expand and offer more places to two-year-olds. There are an estimated 100,000 places required across the country according to government officials.
