Labour candidate in North Norfolk predicts “bleak” future for older people, should Tories win on June 8
The Labour candidate for North Norfolk is predicting a “bleak” future for many older people should the Tories win on June 8.
Stephen Burke’s warning comes following the announcement of the Conservatives’ plans in its manifesto.
Mr Burke said: “Many older people are set to lose their winter fuel payment and will have to pay for their own care. Some will have to choose between eating and heating, with potentially disastrous consequences.
“If you have contributed all of your life it is only fair you have access to a secure and dignified retirement. That is why Labour will protect pensioner incomes by legislating to keep the Triple Lock on state pensions over the lifetime of the next parliament.
“This means your pension will rise each year by whichever is highest: average earnings, inflation or 2.5pc. Labour will also keep winter fuel payments and free bus passes for everyone over the age of 60.”
