Long awaited work to improve drains at a Norfolk mere to stop flooding could be set to take place soon after a nearby supermarket closed down.

Diss Town Council is hoping to take advantage of the closure of the Co-Op store in Mere Street, Diss to replace the drain which runs underneath the store’s car park and prevents the water from overflowing and flooding nearby homes.

However, in the past a section of the drain under the car park has collapsed and been blocked by a build up of silt and other objects creating the risk of a rising water level in the mere.

The Co-Op store closed at the end of March after the retailer sold the premises to discount chain Aldi.

But the new Aldi supermarket is not due to open until the end of the year and has applied to alter the existing layout of the car park by increasing the size of spaces and providing parent, child and cycle parking.

In total, there would be 70 spaces, representing a loss of six spaces on the existing provision and the council is hoping to use the work to the car park as an opportunity to improve the drains.

The problems have been caused by the design of the drain when it was first built as the first few metres are uphill, meaning silt can gather at the entrance.

Town clerk Deborah Sarson said the pipes leading from the drains eventually connected up with the River Waveney after crossing underneath Park Road and the town’s fire station.

She added: “If we don’t do something about it then there will come a time when we get a huge rainfall and the water will rise to the point where it becomes a problem.”
