With UKIP fielding candidates in all 13 of the seats in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council elections, Nigel Farage’s party could cause a major shake up on the east coast.
A third of the council’s 39 seats are up for grabs and several long-serving councillors have not sought re-election; among them Labour’s Mick Castle; former Tory mayor Tony Smith; and Labour’s John Holmes and Charles Marsden. Former Yarmouth MP Tony Wright is standing for Labour in the Gorleston ward.
Before voters went to the polls on Thursday, Labour held control over the Conservatives by just one councillor.
Votes are being counted at Yarmouth Town Hall from 1pm with the first results expected before 2pm.
